Episode 28: San Diego Sports Talk: Interview With Author Gil Sperry
February 17, 2009 09:23 AM PST
This show has only one segment, an interview with Author Gil Sperry. Sperry recently released a book titled Soccer’s Story & A Futbol Fable. In this book, Sperry recaps a remarkable season that he had coaching the Valle Lindo Elementary Eagles co-ed soccer team to a championship game at the Olympic Trainning Center in Chula Vista. The Eagles run to the championship game is remarkable because most of the members of the team started the season out of shape while lacking fundamental skills, and haveing no concept of team play. Sperry’s book is so compelling that it has already sparked the interest of screenwriters Robert Conder and Steve Gehrke (Script Supervisor for The Dark Knight). Together they are collaborating on a screenplay which is currently titled The Beautiful Game, A Beautiful Season. Episode 27: San Diego Sports Talk: Buick Invitational and USD Mens Basketball

In a podcast experiment, Dan combines the magic of a podcast and the power of Mathematica, to bring you an interactive educational experience. Dan’s fiancée, Abby Brown, created and published an NFL QB Passer Rating demonstration on the Wolfram Institute Demonstrations’ site (The Creators of Mathematica). If you choose to do so, this demonstration can be used by you the listener while listening to the podcast, so that you have a better understanding of how the quarterback passer rating is calculated. You can also choose not to use the demonstration and learn by just listening. After the lesson, Dan explains why he believes this is not an accurate or effective way to rate a quarterbacks performance. Because it’s Thanksgiving, Dan tries to find something positive in Sunday’s loss to the Colts, which he does in the play of Jacob Hester. However, the reality is the Chargers loss yet another close game and some of the blame in that loss can be attributed to Norv Turner’s poor clock management in the 4th quarter. That being the case, Dan’s spends a great deal of time berating Norv’s skills at play clock management. Despite the Charger’s loss to the Colts, with Denver’s loss to Oakland, Dan is still die hard in his belief the Chargers can make the playoffs. That being the case, he lays out what he believes is a realistic scenario for the Chargers to win the AFC west championship this year. Episode 15: Giving Thank's !
